MOVING INTO THE WINTER SEASON

Hello to everyone. My name is Jane Elbon and I am the winter season mentor. I have met most of you and know you have started the wonderful world of fundraising! It will be a marvelous journey and you will come out of this experience with so much more than you can imagine. You are helping so many people by raising money for research and patient programs. You may never really know how many people you are impacting but know that it is a huge number. It is not just the money but the desire to do it that is so greatly appreciated. I am a survivor myself so I know firsthand how important it is and what kind of impact it can have on your life to know that there are people like you out there that are willing to give so much of their time and money to try and find a cure.

Next week I will be running the NIKE Women's 1/2 marathon. It is really going to be an exciting race and we are all so psyched up for it. I can't wait to see all those purple TNT shirts out there on the course. Crossing the finish line will be be an awesome and I'm sure an emotional event. I hope you are all able to complete your goal and I am only more than happy to help you accomplish it.

LONGEST TRAINING RUN

September 26, 2009

CONGRATULATIONS!!

After this day the Nike participants can say that you have taken yourselves to the wall. Looking at that training schedule back in May, it may have been nearly inconceivable that you could run 22, 16, or 14 miles. Each week you have kept an open mind, stretched the idea of what you thought was physically possible and now - here you are!! You have nearly reached your goal.

It was such an honor for us to be there to see each of you finish this training run. Even though everyone was exhausted you could tell that every one was also so proud, upbeat, and full of enthusiasm because well....YOU FINISHED YOUR LONGEST TRAINING RUN!! We are all looking forward to that very same spirit when we see you cross the finish line in San Francisco and San Antonio!! Congratulations again and we'll see you on the running path next week!!

As you approach recommitment, remember to focus on why you are fundraising for your event. You are helping LLS patients and families cope with Leukemia and Lymphoma and funding research for a cure. It is an awesome experience when you finish your event and know that you just ran/walked 26.2 or 13.1 miles to help others.

When I finished the Phoenix PF Changs Marathon in January 2008, I was approached by a survivor and her husband and two little boys in tow. She said that I was her pace person for the last 5 miles of the race. It was quite humbling, because you guys know I'm not fast, but she was sincerely grateful. It really made all the fundraising phone calls, emails and letters I sent out worth it for that one moment alone.

Be proud Team Tulsa....You are my Heroes!

Tracking Your Miles

There are so many ways to keep track of your practice miles, so there must be a way for every body. Regardless of the tracking tool that works for you, I highly recommend that you keep track because people are impressed by this number.

Tools
  1. Pen & Paper
  2. Excel
  3. Calendar (where you only mark your running stuff)
  4. Tulsa Million Miles (http://www.tulsamillionmiles.com/)
  5. Runners World (http://www.runnersworld.com/)
  6. Offical Running Log

If you know of any other tools or website, please share them in the comments section.

Mentor Intro: Monique

Hey! I am Monique and I will be mentoring along side Matt, Vicki and Rhonda. We have a great season planned for you, but I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. I have been involved with TNT for about 4 years now. In 2006 I signed up for an event because I missed running. I was a runner in HS, but had been away from the sport for 7 years. Once I got in the groove I was hooked again. This season I am trianing for my 5th event and I am really excited. Two friends will be training in their hometowns (Chicago, IL and Richmond, VA) will be meeting me in San Francisco.

As mentors we are here to help you fundraising, so here is my first piece of advice. Find 100 addresses and mail off your letters. Send out update emails after you have reached 100 practice miles and every month afterwards. This is how I raised my $3600 for my first event.

Thank you for allowing me to take this journey with you. You will have a great time, even on the rough days. Both the heroes and runners that you meet will make a lasting impression on you life.
